His early life was marked by challenges and struggles. Born in 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts, Geisel was the son of German immigrants. He grew up in a family that had a long history of involvement in the brewing industry. He was educated at Dartmouth College, where he was an editor of the school’s humor magazine, the Dartmouth Jack-O-Lantern. After graduating, Geisel decided to pursue a career in art and illustration.

During the 1920s and 1930s, Geisel worked as a freelance cartoonist and illustrator. He published cartoons in magazines like The Saturday Evening Post, and he created advertising campaigns for companies like NBC and Standard Oil. It was during this time that he first began using the pen name “Dr. Seuss.”

Dr. Seuss’s first children’s book, “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street,” was published in 1937. The book was rejected by several publishers before finally finding a home at Vanguard Press.
